As someone who’s passionate about wellness, I was excited to try the Oura Ring to have a deeper understanding of my health.
Sleep
With sleep being one of the most important components for optimized wellness, having insights into my sleep quality has been one of the most impactful things for my health. The sleep feature measures total sleep, efficiency, restfulness, REM sleep, deep sleep, latency (the amount of time it takes to fall asleep) and timing (the time you fall asleep).
I was aware of things that could negatively impact my sleep (like alcohol), but seeing the data really helped me to make changes. Here are a few things I’ve noticed impact my quality of sleep: alcohol (even one glass of wine), anxiety, eating late (for me this means past 7pm), going out late and overly busy days when I don’t have a chance to unwind before bed.
While I still indulge in a glass of wine here and there and go out for dinners and events, on most days, I stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
Here’s my current sleep routine (and what gives me 90+ sleep scores most nights!):
+ I don’t eat after 7pm
+ In bed by 10pm to wind down (no screens). Ideally asleep by 11pm
+ Magnesium and Butterfly Pea Flower. This combination helps calm my mind and body which creates for deeper sleep
+ Dry brush and steam shower
+ 10 minute meditation
+ Slip Sleep Mask (helps me fall asleep quicker)
Stress
Oura released the stress tracking feature in 2023. Since having this data, my stress levels have improved significantly. It measures daytime stress by continuously tracking temperature, heart rate, and heart rate variability (HRV). What I’ve realized is that most of my stress is ‘perceived’ stress, and with some meditation and breathwork I can sustain low stress levels for most of the day.
Activity
The activity feature measures daily goals, inactivity time, recovery time, training frequency and volume. I use the activity feature to track my steps and ensure I’m moving every hour and hitting at least 10,000-12,000 steps daily.
Oura recently released the heart health feature which measures cardiovascular age. From their website, cardiovascular age is “is estimated by measuring your pulse wave velocity (PWV) and evaluating age-related changes in the shape of your heartbeat’s signal.” I haven’t looked too deeply into this feature but love that they’re constantly offering more in-depth insights into health.
Overall, I highly recommend the Oura ring if you’re looking for ways to optimize wellness. Having insights into our own personal health basically 24/7 can really help shift our mindset as well as our routines. For me, the sleep and stress data has been invaluable, encouraging a ton of healthy shifts. My sleep has improved, which helps me feel more clear headed and balanced throughout the day, my stress levels are much more manageable and I’m moving more throughout the day.
